“Who invented energy flow?”
There is no single person who invented ‘energy flow.’ Energy is a fundamental natural phenomenon that has always existed.
However, over the centuries, many different scientists have discovered what it is, how it works, and how we can generate and use it.
If we look at the most common forms of energy flow today, specifically electricity, these are the most important pioneers:
1. The Discovery of Continuous Current
- Who: Alessandro Volta (an Italian physicist)
- When: Around 1800
- Details: Before Volta, people could only generate static electricity (short sparks). Volta invented the voltaic pile, the very first battery. With it, he demonstrated that electricity could flow continuously through a wire. The unit of electrical potential, the Volt, is named after him.
2. The Founder of Electrodynamics
- Who: André-Marie Ampère (a French physicist)
- When: Around 1820
- Details: Ampère discovered how electric currents behave and how they cause magnetism. He is considered the founder of electrodynamics. The unit of electric current, the Ampere, is named after him.
3. The Invention of the Electric Motor and Dynamo
- Who: Michael Faraday (a British physicist)
- When: The 1820s and 1830s
- Details: Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction. He showed how you can convert motion into electricity (the basis of the dynamo) and electricity into motion (the basis of the electric motor). Without his discoveries, we would not have power plants today.
4. Making it Usable for the Masses
- Who: Thomas Edison (an American inventor)
- When: Latter half of the 19th century
- Details: Edison did not invent electricity, but he made it practically usable. He improved the light bulb and built the first complete electrical grids in cities to light homes and streets.
